The notable changes are as follows:

a new primary font, JetBrains Mono, which I feel is nicer on the eyes compared to the previous one.

Responsive margins and padding to utilize just the slightest bit more space on smaller screens.

Cleaned up older versions of the Zola shortcodes that I made early on. Replaced with fewer but more useful tools. This just makes things easier for me.

A side effect is that all the old posts are now cleaner to look at, and some have been rearranged.

Updated this post with a re-rendered version up to my current standards.

Trying out my dream to make an online keyboard museum of sorts, which you can look at here.

buncha small stuff

probably something else I'm forgetting

I'll keep making art as usual, but the keyboard gallery has always been a goal of mine.

It's a fair bit of work, but there's only a few things left to bring over regarding my 3D art at least. My photography will probably be put here as well, but I'll need to think about it more first.

<del>This will be filed into the cohost archive category and the art category. I didn't realize I could put things into multiple categories. This does bring up a question on what the purpose of categories even is if I treat them like a broader tag system, but I guess that's still useful anyways.</del>

Update (2024-12-27): I'm undoing this change because I'm not super happy with it. The cohost archive category will be merged with the existing cohost tag to avoid double-posting in the categories. I forgot that I don't have a primary feed for this site (something I should probably figure out) so I keep things strictly separated into the existing categories so that people don't get double posts in their feeds.

Also been working on doing some reorganizing of the tags here. I added a 2024 tag which will help people find my posts based on year as I go forward. 2025 comes up soon of course.

The new posts will push down my more recent art in the tag lists, but that's okay.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have a great year in 2025.

I'll be talking briefly about mental health, depression and medication in this post. This is partially a vent, but also I want it to be a story for people reading to not give up hope on yourself.

Through middle and high-school, and even into proper adulthood, I have been quite severely depressed. This has gone mostly untreated my whole life. Attempts have been made through the years to give me appropriate care and treatment for what is wrong with me, but through my own fault or through the systems fault, it didn't work very well. For so long, probably a decade, I've been in a rut. I've been so fucking sad and hopeless every single day, trudging through the mud. This grinds down your will to be a person, it pulverizes your soul to dust when allowed to go unchecked for that long. Depression symptoms can come from a variety of places, but mine came from one major actor; ADHD.

Recentlty I worked up the energy and courage to speak to my doctor about additonal medication to treat my symptoms. After working out the prescription stuff and all that business, I started my dosage. Treatment for an ADHD diagnosis may vary for a lot of people, but for me it has worked wonders in the last week. Most importantly, it has given me back my autonomy. My will to live.

This last week has been mostly spent cleaning up after the mess I've made the last few years. Depression nesting, dust and uncleanliness, garbage. If you're in a similar situation, understand that there are absolutely people who are dealing with the same thing. You aren't alone, and these symptoms don't define you. You're not disgusting, lazy, or a waste of time or energy. These are things I felt too. Nearly every day. There are a number of things that enter your mind and tear you down from within. Societal pressures, people not understanding the suffering. It's a total negative feedback loop. But there are people who care, who understand. It is imperative that you keep trying things to help yourself. There's always a way out, keep going.

Thanks for reading, I'll be posting more art soon. Been working my ass off on some (currently) private projects.

There's no real reason I need to explain where I've been, but I feel like doing so will help me get back in the swing of things a little bit, and might give me a thing to look back on in the future. World politics stress is a real thing, and it's something I've found myself caught up in again I guess. It's taken a lot out of me recently, on top of some other personal struggles and burning out on my art. A perfect storm for lack of motivation and energy. I'm working through it and figuring out medication stuff, but in the meantime I need to find a way to keep myself from falling back into the toxic sludge of depression.

Today I put together the cover image render from a few experiments I've been fiddling with the last week. I'll post a full res image later on, but the render time will probably take the entire night.

Here's a handful of other things I've tinkered with since my last update on the site.

A weird bird helmet that came to me as soon as I woke up one day. Some light subd modeling practice as well.

2 custom marbles I made for Marble Blast PlatinumQuest. Mostly a test to see how the mod tools work.

PlatinumQuest is a really awesome mod for Marble Blast that takes all of the content from all of the games and brings it all into one place. It also throws in a lot of QoL changes, and an entire online community level browser built right into the game.

This is a larger project, one that burnt me out a bit. I did definitely learn a lot of good things from it so far, especially regarding finding a design process that works for me personally.

That's about it for the notable things I've worked on recently. I'm hoping to finish up the bird robot at some point and make a few more marbles for PlatinumQuest, but it's been real hard thanks to my own brain. I hope everyone reading this from the US is staying safe. Try to keep your heads up, I know it's been feeling really hopeless here lately. Surround yourself with people who love you for who you are.

Searching the tags page with Ctrl+F works great as a search function for the tags without the need to do any scripting stuff for a search function on the site. I'm not super keen on learning all that stuff because it seems kinda scary.

Categories are for broad topics that people can subscribe to (like this new "fluff" category for rambling mostly unorganized word posts), and tags are for more specific things that people can click on to find similar media on the site.

Additionally, this is my site. It doesn't need to make perfect sense to everyone. As long as it works. The site will become more populated with tags as I use it, so it'll never be perfect, and that's alright.

Also happy spooky month, and rest well Cohost.

Icons

Spent some time in Inkscape throwing together some simple icons that I don't completely hate. Just 2 of them for now, the favicon and a question mark, which is used as the favicon for the 404 page. I'm not entirely sure that this visual style will develop further or if I'll switch to something else later, but I kinda like it this way right now. I'm also experimenting with the Open Graph protocol things in the main template so that my site embeds nicely in chat apps.

Theme

The base theme for this site is the Zola after-dark theme. It's definitely a good looking one, but I have made some changes for this update. The biggest improvement is adding some shortcodes for inline image styling to help theme the posts more easily and flexibly. The other changes are mostly down to writing up a little document for myself laying out the theme rules, like going forward I will make all posts have a 6:1 cover image. This keeps things slim for mobile viewers who are scrolling through the feeds. This document also lays out my color scheme, which is primarily black and a specific orange tone that I enjoy.

Another big change to the theme is that media is now restricted by the size of the post wrapper, which means that content which is too large will be scaled down to fit the viewport. This helps fit big (high res) images onto narrow screens, which was a problem with my first post.

I want to explore making my own cursors for this site later on.

Small File Structure Change

A small tweak to the organization of the files for the site, specifically what is defined as a core post. Core posts are now defined as any internal page that needs to be separate from the main feed. They also shouldn't be tagged. This should keep navigation of the tags page from being clogged with internal pages that are accessed by other means.

Wrapping Up

That's all I got to say on this post. The goal with all this initial setup is to find a workflow that works for me and that will be extensible and long-lasting. Getting this site up and running was definitely rushed a bit, but that did force me to learn stuff fast. Now that the big changes are out the way, I should be able to start focusing on posting my art and other media Cohost style. Thanks for reading, you're always appreciated.

here's a little gift in the form of a shortcoded image embed with inline styling, as a test.

Cohost felt like a home, truly. Throughout 2024 it taught me how to be comfortable with my art and being confident in posting it. It catalyzed a large change in my life, and for that I am very thankful. You can access my page, or what remains after the servers shut down, at this link.

Thank you to the Cohost devs for providing a unique and life changing experience, and I hope that we get something like Cohost again in the future.
